Help!! My computer wont start!!

I am having a problem with my computer, any thoughts or ideas would help. So for quite a while now my computer has been giving this problem where it will start all the way until right where the screen where your supposed to sign into windows, instead it will just turn into a black screen with just the cursor working, unless I restart it couple more times then every once in a while it will bring up the login screen... Rarely and not really at all anymore... the only reason I am on it right now is because I have it running in safe mode with networking... I have tried everything, starting it with it cold or warm after a while or right away... I have tried twenty different spyware or virus removing programs and a bunch of de-bugging programs... nothing (I'm not really sure whether any of those R worth anything got my money back so I guessed it be wirth a shot...) Either way I read somewhere a looong time ago a way to back everything up then erase everything on my computer and put it all back on, I'd like to avoid doing this if at all possible but if this is my only chance can someone tell me how to do it?? I appreciate any and all help!! Thank you!!

If you can't get Windows to load reliably or fully the problem is more likely to be hardware than malware.
Post your specs ( That's the motherboard cpu and so on if it's a custom build and the make and model if you bought a Dell or what not.)
To save your data you're going to have to remove the hard drive from the current computer and do one of the following.
Take note of how the drive is jumpered you'll need to return it to the original when you reinstall. The connections are on the back and the jumper is little plastic bridge, the positions are printed on the back of the drive so you'll be able to tell what's what.
If you're dealing with an SATA drive you can skip the jumper changing.
Connect it as slave/cable select in a new computer and using the new machine either burn your files to disk or transfer then to a usb hard drive.
Put the old hard drive in an inexpensive usb enclosure, jumper it to master, and transfer your files off of it and to the new computer.
With your data safe you can troubleshoot much more freely or reformat if that's what you chose to do.
First on the list is the power supply can you swap it out? The boot up that doesn't quite get there or only gets there after repeated restarts often means power supply that's failed.
Safe mode works simply because Windows loads the bare minimum and makes fewer demands.
Second on the list is the video card or the on-board video, if either is going south it will cause what you're describing.
A pci video card is an inexpensive way to check but if you have a friend with an old video card you can use that would be even better.
Swap the cards and see if the problem clears up.
Third on the list.
Now, from the OEM web site or the hard drive makers web site download the diagnostic for your hard drive, you can run it from a floppy or from a cd your choice.
You'll need to put either drive first in the boot order so that the computer runs from disks.
Run the diagnostic.

Yes you can do a format and reinstall of XP, but make sure you have all the restore disks, if you need them, and/or the XP cd before you start.

I might be overheating. Check you bios for you computer's temps.
