Setting up a Home Network

Hello all--

Im setting up a small home network with 2 PC's running WinXP through a wired router.

Right now, the two share an internet connection. I've ran each machine through the Network Setup Wizard and given each the same Workgroup Name.

I've set all of the HD's (2 each = 4) to be shared by right clicking on the drive>Properties>Sharing tab> and then checked the boxes: "Share this folder on the Network" and "Allow network users to change my files".

Then on each computer in Windows Explorer, I went to Tools>Map Network Drive and then browsed for each drive I wanted to connect. It worked for all 4 drives and now I can connect to each drive from the opposite computer

I've also shared all of my printers successfully


Here's my question:

Each System Drive "C:" with Windows on each computer can be accessed from the opposite PC. However, when trying to click on the windows folder, the program files folder, or the documents and setting folder, I am told that "access is denied".

I'm sure that its because these are the system drives, but is there a way to allow one of these to be accessed and worked with from a different computer?

I've tried going through to each folder and sharing each of them, but it still doesnt work.

Are those specific folders hidden in each directory? If so you may have to "unhide" them before you can see them over your network.

Nope nothing is hidden.

Basically I want to access the "My Documents" folder of a different user from a different computer. Every account has full priveleges and I've gone through each folder and set the permissions to give full control to everyone (I did this in the folder properties - security tab). It still doesnt work.

That is a limitation of simple file sharing in XP. You have to share the whole profile and give everyone full control.

So theres no way to do what I want - access user documents through a mapped drive?

Poor design on Microsofts part, I can't even image how hard it would be to do this in Vista. They have to stop assuming that all of thier OS users are computer illiterate and paranoid when it comes to security.

Taking Owneship of the files may provide a solution. Here's how:

In the user properties for each account, make sure that you do NOT have the option checked to make files and folders private.

If both systems are XP Pro, you can disable simple file sharing and set it up the old fashioned NT way.
