I am trying to get a large number of audio files converted to MP3 format. They are now in wma format. I have MS Media Player ver 10 on the computer, along with a range of other audio and video related programs.

How, specifically, can I convert all these files to a format my Palm T/X can understand without upgrading to an expensive audio player on the Palm?

CDex works, and it's free. I use it to convert CD's to MP3 and you should be able to drag and drop onto the program and tell it to convert.

Thanks. I clicked on glc's link, downloaded the program, and within a minute or two had converted the files from wma to MP3 format. Just by selecting a file from a list, right clicking, I was able to bring up the conversion function for any audio file on my system.

Snarfie - is CDEx capable of converting WMA to MP3? I *know* it's an excellent CD ripper and WAV to MP3 converter but I was not aware that it could do anything with a WMA.

I just downloaded CDex and received the following information after installing the software:

Cdex is a is utility which can extract Digital Audio (DA)
tracks from an Audio CD into files on the hard disk. The
extracted audio tracks can be stored as WAV or MP3 (MPEG-1
Audio Layer-3) files. CDex is using the Adaptec's ASPI library
Manager to communicate with the CD-ROM device, So make sure
that you have installed the proper ASPI drivers (see also the
HELP file and the FAQ page!)

iTunes will also do it.

Interesting post, Ray. I have a lot more faith in giving my music duties to Apple than any other company on the net, so I am going to download and use the iTunes software.

Thanks.

I would not install iTunes on anything unless you have an iPod to go with it.

Interesting. I really like their software, and have been using it for a day this latest time. What makes you say don't use it without an iPod?

Because the iTunes-iPod tie in excludes using any other digital player, that 's the way it's DRM was designed.
That said, if you're going to confine yourself entirely to mp3s and not buy any music from the Apple store you can sync a Palm with iTunes with a third party app : http://www.downloadsquad.com/2005/10/26/interested-in-getting-itunes-on-your-palm-device/

There's no guaranteeing how long this will work but if you don't use the iTunes store you don't need to upgrade so make sure automatic upgrade for iTunes is disabled.
In your place I would just go download the Songbird beta from here : http://www.songbirdnest.com/
