I have a Compaq Presario x6000 laptop. When I turn it on it makes a high pitch beeping noise much like if you were to hold a key down while at the post screen. It doesn't seem like it is a bios error message because it gets past the initial Compaq screen and tries to boot the computer. When it tries to boot from the hard drive an error message comes up that says TRAP 00000006 ======Exception==== and there is a lot more text underneath. It is not a blue screen errror but more of a black screen error. The computer then stops and I have to hold the power button down for 4 seconds to turn it off. All while this is happening the same annoying beep noise is going on. The keyboard doesn't seem to work at all. I can't get into the bios to boot from cd or anything like that.

I have tried taking out the keyboard and booting to see if a key was stuck. No go.

I am out of ideas and am open to try any ideas anyone here might have. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Calypso

Try removing the harddrive and see if the BIOS gives you a no boot disk found error.
How many sticks of ram does it have? more then one? try taking one out one at a time.

Thanks for the reply

I removed the hard drive and booted. The annoying beeping sound is still there and the keyboard still doesn't work. I received the following message after the post screen.
Intel UNDI, PXE-2.0 (build 082)
Copyright (C) 1997-2000 Intel Corporation

For Realtek RTL8139(X)/8130/810X PCI Fast Ethernet Controller v2.13 (020326)
PXE-E61: Media test failur, check cable
PXE-MOF: Exiting PXE ROM.

I think that qualifies as a disk not found error.

There are two sticks of ram. I have tried all combinations of ram possible including no ram at all. The boot with no ram at all made a different beep sound that was way less annoying and seemed to relate to the bios.

Update: I have been playing with this a bit this evening and have figured out a few things. If I use a usb keyboard I can get into the bios and make any changes I need without a problem. Once the computer enters cmos setup the beep's speed gets faster and its pitch gets higher. If I boot with a Windows XP cd in the cd-rom now it automatically boots into installation during the time it says "Press any key to enter setup" or whatever it says. To me this confirms my suspicions that the computer thinks a key is being pressed and held down.

Thanks for moving this post. Any other ideas would be helpful and appreciated.
