Hey guys wonder if u can help me.....


im running a network at my house on a 512kb adsl line.....with 4 computers..i know thats a slow crap speed but in south africa u cant get faster currently (cost about $150 a month for the speed im getting) anyways.....is their a way that each PC can say only use 100KB/s of the speed? soo that I wont get lag when someone else is downloading a movie?


the pc's are XP pro....

You can do it with a router that has a QoS feature. The Linksys WRT54GL with open source DD-WRT firmware can do it.

er....I have a netgear router.....? is it possible with a neatgear?

ok then...what about software ON the pc......make the max speed of the lan at 100kb/s?

Quite a few software bandwidth shapers and limiters are out there .. for example check - http://www.exefind.com/bandwidth/ .. however it's a very inefficient solution. The person downloading the movie might as well just disable the software solution you install. Also note that most of these s/w are shareware or commercialware - for the same price you could get yourself a router that supports QoS.
