i have two hdds. the one i need to pull data off of still has an OS on it and stuff but the computer it used to be in doesn't work and i know that the hdd i need will not work in this computer because the MB & chipsets are different. so how do i get the data off of the HDD i need and transfer it to this current computer? i tried just plugging it into this PC but when i go to open the drive, all of the files and stuff are read only and i tried changing that but it was a no go.

First, I gather you attached the "old" drive as a slave on the working computer? Can't you copy and paste read only files off of it? What is it formatted as?

What exactly is the error message you're getting? What opperating system did the old computer use?

Windows XP has a built in encryption. If you enable it, certain accounts "own" certain files. You can remove this by following the instructions here.
