In-game problems

My brother said his computer randomly restarted last night when he was playing Battlefield 2142. Now, he has problems with the mouse and keyboard in the game. They both work fine until he actually gets in a game, works at the login screen, single player/map selection thing.

We've tried a system restore which didn't work so then we tried reinstalled the game including the patch, and that didn't work either.

Both the mouse and keyboard don't work in game, but things like alt tab and alt ctrl del work.

What could be the problem?

That has happened to me before in-game that my computer randomly restarted. Does he have the latest driver updates for his video card? I personally have never had a ATI card so I can't help you as much as other PCMech people. When these random restarts happened to me it was because I had drivers that weren't fit for my card so I had to go back. If he has the latest updates try going back an update and try it out. More than likely a computer restarting in game means your video card had a serious error which more than likely means the drivers he has have bugs or something of that sort.

Thanks, I'll try an older version. I know this one has had some problems, most errors went away when I disabled AA.

I installed older 2006 drivers and same thing. I don't know if it's DirectX or not. WoW works fine and it says everything is ok in dxdiag.

Is he using standard PS2 mouse and keyboard or are they usb or wireless?

They are both USB and not wireless.

Is he using a usb hub, does he have a driver disk?
What make and model keyboard/mouse ?
It sounds as if something got, overwritten or corrupted when the computer restarted.

Both are connected to the back of his comp

Mouse: Logitech G5
Keyboard: idk some other brand

I have the drivers for the G5 and I'm sure he has drivers for his keyboard.

The problem only happens when in game. They both work fine on desktop and in WoW.

It may be worth a shot to uninstall the games once again ( move the saved games someplace safe), and run a registry cleaner after you check to make sure you've got all the files and then uninstall the mouse driver/keyboard drivers and do the same .
Then turn around and reinstall the drivers and then the game,
If it will run when you do that then move the saves games back, if the keyboard and mouse start freezing again then the glitch is with the saved games.

Nothing is wrong with the saved games, it does the same in multi player. I'll try reinstalling the G5 and keyboard, but if that's the problem then why does it happen with only BF2142 and nothing else?

I have been trying to search the Battlefield 2142 forum over at EA : http://forums.easports.com/mboards/category.jspa?sls=3&categoryID=71&lkey=RNhfwgtB9EzlKnQiCmaMdAAAKDw but they're having server problems just now and it's slow.
What I have found is that there is a keyboard bugs, this one called the Alt + Tab bug, and there may be others.
Have your brother go over there and start his search with that.

It seems that it was the character that doesn't work on both single player and online. His older character works without a problem. I guess he'll just have to start over, maybe a server problem. He deleted the character.

Another possible solution showed up over at the forums.

have you changed your key settings?? this can happen when doing that just go to the control setting in game and click the "default" button to reset them.
Give that a try, it was an issue people were getting a few months ago (around the time of 1.20 release as after install it removed any NON default key settings).

Thanks for the find, but he already deleted the character from his account. I don't think he can get it back afterwards.
