I'm a complete n00b at linux
I put Damn Small Linux on a flash drive once and messed w/it for a day but thats all the linux experience I have

I'm trying to install Ubuntu 6.10 Desktop onto my newly built machine
(still trying to figure out a CPU Overheating problem) (http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=178049)

I want to use it to get to know linux, learn the shell commands, learn to program, and set it up as a server

but my problem is(this'll seem a little stupid)
I can't figure out how to start the installer

I made the CD and I put it in
When it loaded I selected "Start or Install Ubuntu"
The Linux Kernal Loaded
The Ubuntu logo came up
Then, it went into the shell and said:

/bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off
(initramfs) _

What do I do now?

Thanks in Advance,
Ryan

You may have gotten a bad download or CD. Download it and burn it again. When you select "Start or Install Ubuntu" it will boot to a desktop. The you click on the install shortcut on the desktop. The wizard is pretty easy to follow.

OK, I have a bigger problem now

The new cd works on a different computer but not my new computer
The cd returns the error message

Here are the parts in my new computer:

Intel Pentium D Processor 925
Intel Media Series Motherboard DG965WH
Corsair 1gig ram (DDR2)
Seagate SATA 300GB with NCQ
Sony DVD-ROM Drive

What could be the problem and how can I fix it?

Thanks,
Ryan

Ok,

I feel a little dumb

I didn't know that the Pentium D architecture was different than the Pentium 4

I was burning the wrong type of cd which explains why it worked on my Pentium 4 Computer

Whenever you download an ISO then burn it, when you boot instead of picking start/install Ubuntu, select "check CD for Defects" That will save you a ton of time, I have so many coasters and hours wasted because of bad ISO burns.
