Finally got all my parts, except the monitor (see below,) and assembled everything. All components accept the Seagate HD were "retail" in sealed boxes

I carefully wired everything up and installed the components, I really took my time. When I powered it up the fans run, the mouse lights up, the LED on the dvd drive lights up for a second BUT nothing else happens. No beeps, nothing on the screen (I'm using my old SVGA monitor), no lights on the keyboard.

Then, I removed EVERYTHING from the case connected only the mobo (with CPU), the video card, monitor, and memory but still nothing. Tried removing the memory and the video card also.

Tried removing the battery from the mother board, moved the Bios jumper to Pins 2&3, tried removing the jumper totally.

Any suggestions? Unfortunately I don't have any spare parts to test with. I bought the parts from different on-line sources.

I see there is a chassis intrusion terminal on the MOBO but nothing is connected to it, is this OK?

I'm probably just doing something dumb, I hope :-)

I am 98.23 % that your motherboard is a lemon. I would RMA it for being DOA.

The processor may not be compatible with the revision of your motherboard.

Looks like it's not compatible:

The following board revisions (AA numbers) support these processors:

D27094-304 or higher.

Mine is D27094-302 now what do I do?

You have to exchange either the motherboard or the processor.

I don't want to go with a different processor. Would Intel upgrade the board or do I need to deal with the vendor?

Do you think the board is damaged?

Where'd you get the motherboard? Depending on the vendor and how long ago you purchased it, you may be able to exchange it for a compatible motherboard.

I doubt it's damaged.

I bought it at on line company. They say on their web site they don't gaurantee compatibility. I purchased it with about 2 weeks ago.

They say all retail boxes have to be returned to Intel for repair.

Any suggsetions on how to handle it with them?

Should I call Intel directly?

You should first contact the vendor. They may be very receptive to letting you return it for a different board, minus a re-stocking fee. Most vendors dont like returns, but exchanges are usually easier since they still get to keep the money.

I personally would not expect any help from intel unless the board is defective and then they would just replace it.

How can I be sure if they are going to send a replacement that it will be a compatible one?

You don't want a replacement, you want an exchange. You need to see if they'll exchange your D27094-302 for a 304 model, which you know is compatible.

Bought the D975XBX2.

LESSON LEARNED: buy processor and mobo as matched pair. Internet vendors don't always know what Revision they are going to send you

The vendor could not garauntee what rev they would have in stock and ship. Intel would replace exact rev as sent in, if I opted for repair.

I will return the original, eat the restocking fee and move on......

Hindsight is wonderful - you need to do this kind of research yourself *before* buying parts. I have even seen so-called "matched parts" that are incompatible. Sometimes all you need is a bios update, but in this case it's an actual hardware revision issue.

I agree, I learned that the hard way. Thanks to all here that helped, it probably would have taken me a while longer to reach that conclusion (figuring out the rev was wrong) on my own.

Seems like it would be difficult to buy these components on-line because they don't seem to list revisions, do they?

You won't find revisions online, but thats because online vendors don't know what versions of the motherboards they have when they are boxed up in the warehouse.

And this issue is uncommon, so most of the time, its not something to worry about.

Right, but you DO need to research basic compatibility. Most motherboard manufacturers have charts like the one I linked you to. We see people posting in here all the time wanting to put an AM2 socket AMD processor in a socket 939 board, for example. In your case, just because the socket and processor are both 775, that doesn't necessarily mean ANY revision board of that particular model is compatible with the processor you choose. You got bit by the fact that the 975X chipset predated the Core 2 Duo and Intel had to retrofit the board to be compatible. This is not something that can be done to an existing board, it has to be done as a running change in the manufacturing process.

Got the new MOBO installed. HD is formatting right now. There were 12 beeps when this thing started. What does that mean?

Clubit actually does list the revision like in the case of the DS3 v.3.3. I know some people got the ver3.3 from Newegg and then a bunch of others got old ones. A bit shady if you ask me for the Egg to do that.
