OK, I'm VERY NEW to this so you'll have to talk in elementary language for me. I want to build a computer with the help of a friend who knows way more about this than me and I wanted to run his advice by you all to see what you thought of his setup that he suggested for me.
I want to spend around $1,300 for a complete system (including monitor, wireless keyboard and mouse). I would like to eventually have the option of hooking up the computer to my TV and playing games that way with a wireless keyboard and wireless mouse. I want something that I wont have to upgrade for at least a few years and when I do need to upgrade I want the system to be "upgradeable". Here's what he suggested:

Welcome to PCMech. First thing to do is avoid TigerDirect. They have terrible customer service. We recommend Newegg.com.

Next, for an Intel based system, go with a Core 2 Duo chip. They outperform Pentium Ds. This is the basic setup we recommend for C2D based systems:

Asus P5B Motherboard
Intel Core 2 Duo E6300
2GB Corsair Value Select DDR2-667.

Notice the ram speed. Anything higher, such as the DDR2-800 in your is overkill, unless you plan on overclock. And we don't recommend that to new builders.

You don't need the extra cooler. If you buy the chip Retail instead of OEM, it comes with a heatsink/fan and a full 3yr warranty.

Check to be sure your LiteOn comes with burning software.

Antec PSUs are good, but for a system with a power hungry 8800 card, we recommend the Corsair 520HX power supply.

Skip Vista for now and use XP. Vista is still not ready for primetime, too many bugs to iron out still.
