Have you tried using canned air to blast out the dust bunnies?

Sounds like that fan is defective and needs replaced there on that laptop.

took the fan out to clean it and still worked the same think it was like that since i got it any recommendations for good fans? its a dell inspiron 7500
I think its just fine. Most laptops do get very hot. Does the fan increase in speed when you put a load on the computer for a long amount of time?

My laptop gets close to scalding quite often when it's on my lap. I have to use it sparingly. Do you know what kind of processor is in it?

lately the laptop gets very hot and then shuts down and wont turn back on for 2-3 hours and then about 1 hour later the same thing happens. when i turn the computer on the fan is very loud and then it quites down and never speeds back up again. it has an intel pentium 3 processor.

Yes I think the fan moter is bad.
You might not be able to get a new fan, maybe eBay. Id try one of those "NoteBook Coolers" and see if that helps.

Try the fan first. I've tried a notebook cooler and it does nothing to cool off a hot laptop. It just keeps the hot laptop surface off your legs and pulls the hot air away from the bottom of the laptop. Doesn't really cool the laptop at all. You may want to pull the entire heat sink assembly out of the pc and check for dust build up inside the heatsink. My old Toshiba laptop was suffereing from overheating and the fan area was very clean. When I pulled the finned heatsink out it was clogged with dust/dirt on the inside surface.
Very true panama, though a friend at school has a laptop with a totally broken HS fan and a Notebook cooler (Antec i think), it seems to get the job done.

Well what I ended up having to do was:
1. Install I8kfanGUI from here (http://www.diefer.de/i8kfan/index.html)
if your model is supported (they have a chart somewhere on their website) then you can control the laptops fan speed. I set them to max speed all the time
2. Not sure how easy your laptop is to open but I had to take the whole thing apart, clear all the dust, put arctic silver between all the chips and heat sinks then put it all back together.
3. I use a laptop cooler that blow cool air with three fans on to the bottom of the laptop which also seems to help.
My video card hasnt burned out again yet (some dell vice pres intervened when he found out they were being investigated by the attorney general so they sent a new card) and hopefully it wont.
EDIT: Heres that list http://www.diefer.de/i8kfan/index.html#compat
EDIT 2: I just looked and your laptop is incompatible.... that sucks... that program helps me out alot
