I just bought a psp to give it a test run, and I found I've run into a problem. I can't save anything without a memory card! Now after wikipediaing (that sounds strange) it and doing some googling I've come to find that the card is simply a SD flash card. Is that correct? I have one lying around my room somewhere but I can't find it. Should I keep looking (will it work) or should I go out and pick something up that will. It looks just like the one in the picture on wikipedia that says will work, so I'm optimistic (and poor).
Thanks.

The Sony PSP only takes Memory Stick Duo media; an SD card won't fit.

What's the difference though? Does anybody have a psp and use it for more than just gaming? What do you guys think of it?

Sony's Memory Stick is their own proprietary size, designed to work in Sony devices. And SD card will not physically fit into the slot.

People also load movie clips onto the media sticks to watch on their PSPs.
Don't forget, it's MS *DUO* - the smaller more recent version of Sony's memory sticks.
Sony products (except maybe laptops or desktops with multicard readers) accept only their format card - it boosts revenue for them since people can only buy that type of format. FYI, Sandisk branded cards are MUCH cheaper than the Sony branded ones.
Other manufacturers stick to several card formats as well - XD cards aren't compatible with memory sticks, which aren't compatible with compact flash, which aren't compatible with SD cards.
If you just bought the PSP from the store, it should come with a 32mb Pro Duo card. (I don't see how you could even know that the PSP doesn't write to an SD card when it wouldn't fit.)
Anywho, cards that work with the PSP have a little dent on the side opposite from the read/write side.

A gig card is actually not that expensive nowadays.
The more space the better. I use my PSP for not only music and movies, but hosts of homebrew games. Additionally, if you have the right type of PSP, you can turn it into a universal remote, Shoutcast radio, VNC server, and it can emulate everything from GBA to n64 or PS1.

HAHAHAHAHA yeah 1.5 ftw right? Custom FW :)
anyways i would suggest doing some major studying on the psp if you plan to keep it. It is a lot more complex than meets the eye. Granted it might be aimed at a younger audiance you still need to know what you are doing if you truly want to use it to is capability. But once you get the hang of it i promise you will enjoy it.
It definatly has the ability to become a portible media center. And if you really want to get into some neat stuff google "psp homebrew" while homebrew isnt illegal sony doesnt like it. Still its not anything illegal :D

Here are some good sites for psp homebrew.
pspupdates.com
maxconsole.com
psp-hacks.com
You should "downgrade" to 1.5 and update to a custom firmware ex: 3.10 OE.
AND DONT USE SONY's OFFICIAL UPGRADES!
you can play games off the ms and plan n64 games (using Daedalus, its not quite full speed, but playable and getting better).

Ok, first of all I appreciate all the advice and will take the humor in stride. I bought the basic core edition that just dropped in price - it does not come with any kind of memory. Secondly, I can't seem to find my SD flash card (which btw looks exactly like your picture and not squarish in shape) so I didn't know whether it fit or not. I believe I mentoned that in my initial post.
I've yet to fully play with it because of the inability to save anything, but hopefully I'll get that worked out soon.

That's the thing though - we're telling you, 100% for sure, your SD flash card will NOT fit.

Notice the differences between the two cards. MS has the indentation on the left side. SD card has it on the right. You can't just flip the cards over because the electrical contacts are on the opposite side.
The "lock" on the SD is on the left side while the MS's "lock" is on the back (or at least it is with full size MS). The SD cards have "SD" on them, while the MS has a squigly m which screams out "I'm an invading flying saucer".
Also, SD cards are wider than MS cards.
And lastly, I'm going to go to bed. I just finished a grueling HW assignment which is of course due tomorrow morning. And of course I didn't sleep well last night so I'm in zombie mode.
But yea, Tom, you MUST trust with absolute certainty that the SD card will NOT fit into your PSP. Absolute certainty I tell ya! *shrug*
Maybe fluffy ate it?
Also, I don't mean to come across as rude but I think it all came out that way anyways. I'm absolutely exhausted and don't have time to go over my post and polish it up.
Good luck finding the card and getting a good deal on the MS. If you need any headsup on sales or anything, let us/me know. I also have office depot and or staples coupons that they keep mailing to me.

Fluffy must have ate it, cause I never did find it. I was pretty sure it wouldn't work in the first place, but I posted just to make sure because they looked (from that wiki picture and what I could remember) similar. The 1 gig SanDisk memory (the one that works specifically for the pisp) came down in price this week, and with my Target employee discount I picked it up for $30.
I never meant to make anyone mad either. Maybe you could recommend some good games?
Now I have to actually begin playing the dern thing.

Haha, I was never mad. My post time was 4 am - enough said? I was just worried that you'd try making the SD card fit. People have done odder things. I know people who've dropped XD cards into the CF slot of media readers, and tried making SD cards fit into MS slots.
