I'm looking for free software that will allow me to edit a .wma file in a very specific way. I have a recording of people talking, a conversation I need to hear. The only problem is that I can't hear what they are saying b/c there is music in the backgorund. So whatever software you recommend, needs to be able to take care of this backgrounf noise, in this case, music.

Thanks for any help!

This is way too specific for General Software.
I'll move this so the experts can take a shot at it.

Yeah your looking for some serious brains
in theory
the music in the background needs to be singled out and recorded
then that sound track is used to remove the music and what is left is the conversation
then you need to remove ambient sound and static

i used to share a computer lab with the music students that how i know in theory how it works but they were every good at what the did

Problem #1 is it's in .wma format and most editing packages worth their salt don't natively edit .wma files.

Problem #2 - what you want to do requires multiple notch filters - working with notch filtering is very difficult and time consuming. Not to mention freeware editors like Audacity don't generally come with a notch filter plug-in.

You could try using a EQ to maximize the spoken work and minimize the background noise. The human voice is generally found between 500Hz and 2000Hz. But that will raise everything within that frequency range - if any of the background noise falls into that range, you'll have the same problems you're having.
