Motherboard Question

I had a pc built for my shop about a year ago and it quit working. the place went out of buisness so i have decided to try and fix it, thnx to this site!. it wouldnt power up so i installed a new pwr supply and it now turns on for about 1 sec then back off i unplugged all drives and uninstalled all external boards still nothing, i then unplugged a 4 prong connector on the mother board that comes from the pwr supply unit and it will turn on and stay on. My question is is the 4 prong connector for the cpu or? it is an intel mother board i think it is a pentium 3 but not sure srry for the long post and thnx for any replys!

Can you provide a link to the mobo so we can see what connector you're talking about? Pentium 4 mobo's have a 4 pin square connector (2x2) that must be connected to provide additional 12v power to the cpu. I know of nothing similar on PIII boards.

As far as I know, Intel MB do not use that 4 prong connector you are talking about. I have something like that on my power supply, but I'm not completely sure what its for.. Consult your manual.

panama and faint thnx for youre replys, i ended up putting in another motherboard only to have problems with it, it's not the same problem, the store that sold it to me didnt have the manual to it and i cant seem to find any support for it it is a syntax pentium 4 with 2.2 ghz and my video wont show right on my monitor and theres no sound is syntax not in buisness no more? there web sight wont load up for me to get a manual or drivers.

Follow the troubleshooting instructions outlined in the first post of this thread. (http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=12753) You must remove the motherboard from the case when doing this. Let us know what happens.

This is a custom built computer, right? Not a name brand?
