I want to copy a lot of old standard (as opposed to micro) audio cassettes to CDs.
I happened to stumble upon this device by DAK on the Web that claimed to be a
necessary component for accomplishing that task, called a "PC Interface Preamp Mixer."

Does it look like an authentic, useful tool? Or just some unnecessary, overhyped junk?

Not needed. You can accomplish the same thing with free software.
