I recently acquired a Compaq Presario S5314ST - it was free so... It was originally purchased from Staples. It did not come with a spec sheet, and the Compaq website only offers general information about this Presario - nothing specific about the model S5314ST. I want to add a video card, but the AMD and Nvidia site searches turn up no reference to this PC, either.
I bought an ATI Radeon X1050 video card, but it's still in the box until I have some assurance of compatibility. Will this 8X AGP card work in my Presario?
I'm somewhat knowledgable with PCs, but when it comes to mixing and matching hardware I'm a definite novice. I upgraded the RAM to 1Gb using Crucial's online selector, and installed my old hard drive with little difficulty.
What does an AGP slot look like? What is 8X AGP? Does the 8X matter?
Thanks,
Jerry

You're right, the HP site offers little in the way of specs on that pc. It may be that it only has onboard graphics with no AGP slot at all. You'll have to remove the side panel and look inside. An AGP slot will be brown in color compared to the off-white color of the pci slots. An AGP will also be positioned more toward the center of the mobo and located closest to the top (with the tower standing upright) of the mobo (toward the cpu).

Here's your model's specs : http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericDocument?lc=en&cc=us&docname=c00045799#N329
It uses integrated graphics but it's got an AGP slot.
AGP 8X cards are backwards compatible with 4X slots.

Good job, Pam! For some reason, I couldn't find that page.
edit: Guess I should have just googled "Compaq Presario S5314ST specs", that's the first page that came up!

I'm convinced there's an internet correlation for the "hidden in plain sight" problem.
Like turning the whole house upside down to look for your glasses when they're sitting on top of your desk where you usually leave them ( and who hasn't done that? ) .
The day Google writes an algorithm to deal with that they will bury any competition forever!

The only "gotcha" might be the headroom that the stock power supply has ... but that ATI card doesn't look too demanding.

Thanks, everyone. I didn't think of a Google search, I just used HP's own search function. Simple is better.
I'll stuff the card in there tonight.

While you're at it more ram, at least 512 mb, would be a good idea.
The system maxes out at 1 Gb so, if you've got the room and the cash, do it.

I've done that already, thanks (1 gig). Since the computer was free, I felt I could afford to max out the RAM.
