team fortress classic playdemo file

during multiplayer game play i like to record demo's, by typing the console command, record demo.dem and hit enter for recording of game play. but in order to play the saved demo file, I have to join a server, open console and type in playdemo demo.dem and hit enter, then the demo file will play. I want to know, can i play a demo file without joining a game server? And if so then how can I do it?

will it allow you to get into the console from the menu's outside the server?

if it is anything like CS1.6 or CSS all you need to do is load the game and hit ~ and open the console and type playdemo "name" and it should start itself after a sec. playdemo may not me the TF command I cant remember for sure I haven't played in a while. Just use the equivelent comand.
