will any fan controller work with an kind of fan or do they need to match some how?

Yes and No. Yes, a fan controller will control any fan of the same voltage but it will depend on the type of connectors on the fans and the controller and if there are adapters needed. Generally controllers are for 2 pin case fans. 3 pin fans will require cable adapter. 4 pin fans are usually CPU fans and should be plugged into the motherboard.

ok thx that helps, but, the case (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811166004) i want has fans with it already, and it doesnt say anythign about the voltage of the fans. heres the controller (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813999504) i was looking at.

I have that fan controller in my PC. The knobs stick out about half an inch. It looks like that door will still be able to close because it is curved and because (it looks like, but it is hard see) the 3.5" bay is centered, but you might want to research that a little more. As far as the fan controller, it is pretty good. It made 2 of my generic case fans make a soft "clicking" sound with them turned all the way down. All modern PC fans are 12V. The fans look like they only have molex power connectors, but that fan controller comes with molex to 3 pin adapters, so you should be fine. The Sunbeam Rhebous (sp?) is a 5.25" controller that is recommended because it has a hybrid technology that is suppossed to stop the clicking sound.

BTW, the controller has blue led backlight rings around each knob. It makes it look cool, especially in the dark.
