View Full Version : new PC help!
hello everyone.
i was brought here by a friend that recently made a new PC and had you guys help him with it.
now i have 2 problems:
one being i have ram that was given to me, corsair CM 2x1024 - 5400C4 XMS2 675mHz, and two Parallel ATA harddrives. The problems come with most of the latest MOBOs not supporting that ram, and not supporting my "old" (non SATA) HDDs =(.
now the only places i can buy parts for my computer would be, www.tigerdirect.ca or www.lucomputers.ca
CPU: http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2280515
Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 2.13GHz / 2MB Cache / 1066MHz FSB / Conroe / Dual-Core / OEM / Socket 775 / Processor
easly OCed to 3.5 to 4 gHz
PSU: http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2974510&CatId=1079
Ultra / X2 / 550-Watt / ATX / 120mm Fan / UV Sides / SLI Ready / SATA-Ready / 20/24-Pin / Modular Power Supply
GPU: http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2824836&Sku=E145-8008
EVGA GeForce 8800 GTS Superclocked / 640MB GDDR3 / SLI Ready / PCI Express / Dual DVI / HDTV / Video Card
Then i have some other stuff like cpu cooler (mini typhoon), case (ULTRA), and so on.
what i realy need is a motherboard that fits my price range of under 1000 - 1200 can
if anyone has any ideas plz help =)
thank you
Peter

The ASUS P5B Motherboard is a good choice:
http://www.lucomputers.com/aStore/default.asp?productid=2691
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2366120&CatId=1533
I would recommend getting a better PSU also. Pick a brand from the good list here: http://www.pcmech.com/forum/showthread.php?t=131195
Just make sure it is an ATX 2.x PSU with around 500 watts of power.
Here is a good one: http://www.lucomputers.com/aStore/default.asp?productid=3446
hello and thanks for the reply!
i have looked at those but they only have the FDD port and CD/DVD PATA ports.

this machine will be primarly to play video games such at the HL family.

They have one ATA controller that can take up to two ATA devices. For example your two hard drives.
If you need more ATA controllers... you can always get a PCI ATA controller card.
Or you can just get SATA HDDs or optical drives.
alright thanks for that idea, what about if i connect 1 of my HDD to one of the PATA plugs that go to the CD/DVD? that works correct?
then i would only need 1 SATA HDD
I have also read some reviews that both those mother board r very faulty with the PATA converters or what ever it is... what i mean is what is there is what should be used...
so based on teh fact that i could possiblyt get a SATA drive what other mobos would you recommend

No, but ASUS boards consistently work for us :-)

You don't want to buy from tirgerdirect, they have poor customer service and you will most likely have a hard time when needing to rma anything you buy.. I had used them once in the past and that was about all I could stand of them.. I had a cpu crap out on me and they would not rma it, becauase they alwasy blame the customer for it failure.. newegg is the best in the business imo..
yes.. i know.. but i live in canada

Aha. In that case, I believe ncix is the vendor used by most of the Canadians on this forum.

Yes that motherboard will support the memory modules you have.
And +1 on the website LeftyAce suggested.
wow....
that site has prices well below TD.ca
and yes abotu TD's bad service
but ncix.com is very confusing.. and when i build a PC it tells me i must have a fully built pc with windows and stuff when i dont need ram os ... and stuff like that

Don't use any of the configuration options, because you're right, it'll lock you into buying everything. (This is a very dumb website, sorry).
I'd just search for each individual part separately and add it to your shopping cart. It's up to you to make sure you've got everything you need, of course.
roger that.
i sure will, now ill sellmy laptop on ebay and get enough money to buy this and sell my current one =D

Be careful of scammers on eBay when selling your laptop.
I have had some bad experiences with a few over the years.
uh oh... how so... you dont get money or ppl return it broken?

I have had people charge back their cards after I sent out the laptop because a scammer stole their cc information and bought the laptop with it.
I have had a laptop returned to me with a smashed LCD screen. I had to buy another LCD for about 200 bucks out of my own pocket... swap it out myself and then find another buyer. Thus decreasing my profit margin.
If you do sell on the eBay... just make sure to only accept payment through eBay then Paypal. Don't let someone message you directly and pay you directly through Paypal without going through the auction. This way eBay can help you out if it is a scammer.
I would also insure the laptop with USPS for the full value of the laptop.
And make sure you keep all records of the transaction, the tracking number, and shipment confirmation.
yep sure will!
i alreayd have 2 ppl interested in it =)
Also thank you very much for your help selecting my computer components
heres it again!

Switch that CPU to the Retail version to get the heatsink/fan and 3yr warranty. The linked CPU is the OEM (chip only).
Why the little hard drive and big hard drive? Just one big one will work fine.

I would take Alaron's advice on the processor.
If you want a two hard drive setup... that is fine... one for the OS, programs, drivers & etc... the other larger one for storage.
If you go with one... you can always partition the single HDD into two partitions and do the same thing as you would with the two hard drives.

Also check out www.canadacomputers.com. I honestly wouldn't touch Tigerdirect in any part of the world with a 10 foot, armour plated, pole. :D
The only thing that really sticks out to me is that powersupply. Overrated, Overpriced, and there are better choices out there for the price.
Tigerdirect doesn't really have a good selection in this but..this is something decent:
Enermax 535W (http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2503498&CatId=1079)
Better yet, something like this from other sites would be the optimal choice:
Corsair HX 520W (http://canadacomputers.com/index.php?do=ShowProduct&cmd=pd&pid=013410&cid=PS.808) (also at ncix).
