Try AVG Free. I have it installed on several computers that I built.

AVG is a favorite here: lots of folks use and recommend it.

I like Avast better than AVG, but that's just my personal preference.

I have Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic installed on this computer and AVG Free installed on our other two computers. Both work fine, have small software footprints, are easy on system resources and haven't slowed down any of our computers at all. I like Avira a little better because it seems more polished, but after it auto-updates you do get a popup that asks if you want to upgrade to their Premium Security Suite. I just close the window and forget about it.
