Main CPU fan stopped completely!

About 2 months ago I had a new CPU put in my computer, as the shop I had it in to said it needed replacement, and with recent automatic shutdown issues, I opened up the case and see my main CPU fan isn't turning at all. I can spin it with my finger, so I'm assuming it's either the fan itself that is the problem, or the supply power to it?
I'm unsure if this is something I should attempt myself...to replace it, or if it is something that should only be attempted by someone with proper experience? I have nothing to test whether the issue is with the supply power at the motherboard, but thought I would ask here when this issue arises, is it usually the fan or something different such as supply power?

I don't mind attempting this, but thought I would ask prior to doing so, as fan cooling I'm sure is a sensitive area, in that I would think things need to be done correctly, as CPU's aren't cheap!

For information only: The fan says "Intel" on it, and it looks to have a long white handle at the bottom (I'd assume to lock it in place?). The wires go to a socket on the motherboard, and it seems there is another similar socket right beside it.

I currently have an Intel P4 2.8 Ghz CPU, so what do I look for when buying a new fan? I see there are all kinds for sale on Ebay, but for me to buy the correct one, what is it I would need to know?

Is the heatsink fan wire plugged into the fan header that says CPU?

Did you try plugging the wire onto the other fan header? The CPU fan header may have burned out.

If the fan is dead you'll need a new heatsink/fan assembly (http://shop.intel.com/shop/product.asp?pid=SIPS1041&pfid=116&pindex=4&mscssid=K5A526JMWL5M8LG9J3E8QU5LTDHS7PWF)from Intel.

I've noticed some inconstancies in the clip on some 775 fans. They can sometimes be finicky to get fully seated and can come loose if not fully clicked into place.

Can I assume since my processor is the 2.8 Ghz Intel model, that it is the 478 pin type?

Installation "looks" simple, but I certainly won't assume it is without confirmation! Have many of you installed new CPU fans before...if so, is it pretty straight forward?

If the heatsink looks like it has two whitish plastic levers on the top and a plastic retention ring around the socket it's probably a Socket 478 processor. The LGA775 heatsink mounts directly to the motherboard with locking pins.Installation "looks" simple, but I certainly won't assume it is without confirmation! But for a novice, installing a heatsink can be a challenge. For most types of stock heatsinks (AMD and INTEL) you can find something on the web to help you with the installation. Find out exactly what type of processor you have (Socket 478 or LGA775) and we'll help you with the heatsink installation (if necessary).
