upgrading pc

i have a pc but i fried the motherboard about a year ago.. its been in a box but its time to fix it up.. it has a AMD Athlon 64 3700+.. im not going to keep that though im going to keep my XFX NVIDIA Geforce 7800GT Graphics Card, my 1GB RAM, 160GB Maxtor HD, the CD-RW, DVD-RW, etc drive, and i guess tahts it.

i want to get the Intel Core 2 Duo E6700. i was looking at tigerdirect and they have fair prices.. any of you recommend another better place to order? i live in florida, usa btw.

NewEgg.com is what most people on here use to get their parts from. They have good deals and great customer service.

The case you get is all up to you... as long as it fits ATX motherboards... you're fine.

As for the PSU... make sure you get a ATX 2.x PSU with about 450 to 500 watts of power... Antec, Corsair, FSP, Sparkle, and OCZ are a few good brands out there to look for.


As for motherboards... the ones you picked out are decent... what we usually recommend is the ASUS P5B lineup of motherboards.


What kind of memory do you have right now? If it is DDR2 667 or above... your good to go.

I don't think your going to be able to reuse your RAM. The 3700+ is a socket 939 processor which uses DDR RAM. the Core 2s use DDR2. You kind of picked a bad time for upgrades. Everything is switching over to totally new architectures. The most common Core 2 motherboards the P965 chipset is even kind of forcing a lot of people to move to SATA optical drives because they cheeped out on the IDE controller for those boards. We'll help you out for sure, but you're going to have to be careful what you buy.

so i think if by any chance i do have ddr i can use it. but, whats the difference drom ddr2? is ddr2 like dual core? if so.. i want to buy a Gb ddr2 ram that i will later put onto my machine.. if i can get my ddr memory there.. can i later combine them two into the machine to get 2gb? even if one is ddr and one is ddr2? or will that not work??

You can NOT use DDR modules in DDR2 motherboards... they will not even fit in the slot.


If you get a motherboard with DDR2 slots... you will need to use DDR2 memory.

actually f that i dont have money right now and i just want to get my pc ready.. all i need a mobo i dont feel like upgrading right now cuz my mom is tight on money..

what mobo should i get? i had a asus a8n-sli

should i get the same thing or do you recommend other?

the reason my mobo died is because the fan died so it burned something.. not sure what but the people at my local tigerdirect told me that i need a new mobo...

i heard its a problem with the a8n-sli's...

plz what do u guys recommend i get.

Well first of all I wouldn't trust Tiger to tell you what's wrong. Sounds like they got it right, but they are a retail company, not service. As much as I love Newegg as a store, I wouldn't take their advice on what to buy either.

If you just want to get the system back up you can get the same board, but I think your wasting money. With all the data we have on SLI and crossfire now, as good as it looks in benchmarks in the real world cost vs power makes it just not worth it.

The board is socket 939 whereas the processor you picked out is socket AM2. It will not work together.

Its a decent board and not to pricey so you mom should be able afford it. You can also use your old memory and processor with it.



If you go with AM2 which is newer technology...

But... you will need a new processor and new memory... and it is quite pricey.
