So I have Norton 360 and AVG running in the background, allegedly both protecting me. I only visit my bank each day, Yahoo e-mail, and these forums. When I boot up, Norton says I have a bad guy called "Backdoor.Haxdoor". Why didn't the so-called "resident shield" cream it from the get-go rather than letting itself install on my PC? No telling where it came from, but is a a trojan.

Does Norton 360 have a firewall built in?
You need a firewall to keep people from hacking into your pc...

Just get rid of all those anti virus specially Norton.
Alot of people talk about AVG and i guess its pretty good but its UGLY and i know UGLY has nothing to do with how good it works but its still ugly
Try AVAST its pretty and powerfull with a built in Resident shield and protects Emails-works together with Outlook and AIM and P2P ware.. And its free
www.avast.com just register and BAM never worry again and its Pretty

I have AVG and have had Zero problems (Knocking on wood as I type this;) ); however, the main problem is this Trojan somehow made it's way on the computer. My first step would be to get rid of it and then only run one Anti-Virus program, I usually use this as my guide K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Stupid :D ). As for Firewall I just run Windows Firewall and I find it useful plus it's FREE.

I have a 2-Wire brand dsl modem with its own firewall. GLC even had to get the serial # off it in order to use his wireless to access the Net. I don't see how anyone could hack into it since I only visit 3 sites as stated above.

Sarge, there are over 65,000 ports that a hacker can use to gain access to your pc. Are all of your unused ports closed?

That site used to have something called Shields Up you could run and test for security and open ports.

better stay away from norton, i does "something" to your computer. When you familiarize yourself with zonealarm (za for short), you'll find all their nasty trying to connect through the internet. Even one of norton exe components is 'highly considered' a threat by za itself bec. it tries to act like BOSS in your computer (norton 07 to be exact)

I got rid of Norton and my PC also now boots much, much faster. I 've read all the negatives thru the years here about using it, and guess I thought it would finally be a joy to use. Going back to just AVG and still keep ZA of course.

Port 110 is open (POP 3) which by my research shouldn't be open since I'm not a server. I understand the port can be hacked by outsiders. I don't use e-mail from IE so can I close it? If so, how??

Sorry to invade the thread, but same subject. Would love to hear how to proceed.
I have found 21 (ftp, file) and 110 (pop3, pop version 3) open.
I'm assuming 110 is open because I use OE. What about 21?

you can disable it through za (under program control, check for outlook and just cross out all of it), when oe is run it opens port (pop3) for use and is ONLY opened when software needs it (therefore watch out for similar apps like oe). Also, incoming unwanted packets are blocked by the firewall. Maybe 'similar' case would apply on other 'opened' ports. sO If a port is opened, a software needs it (without your knowledge is the scary stuff, and be able to determine if its a valid software), correct me if im wrong..

Sarge, if you open your browser (IE or FireFox or whatever) and input the following: //homeportal. It will bring you to the 2Wire management page. There are a lot of configuration options in there. I have a 2Wire (2nd one) and have everything set to stealth. I have never had a problem.

Thank you. I was wondering how to access the modem. I realized moons ago by accident the 2Wire is also a router but didn't know how to access it. You may have saved my bacon. :)
