We have an unsecured wireless network in our school. Lately, the few laptops that we have have not been able to connect to the Internet or to our domain server. I was checking one today and realized that we are picking up up to 3 other wireless networks from across the back alley (some of those ARE secured).

The computers show that they detect a strong signal for our access points, but they can't get an IP number. If I move the computer to the opposite end of the building so it won't pick up these stray networks, I can log in to our server and nterjet just fine. They also work if we wire them up.

I'm assuming that the stray networks are causing the problem. What can I do about it? Is there a way to set our computers to ignore all networks except the school's?

yes, you can lock in the school's network as the preferred network by moving it to the top of the list in the windows wireless management tool.

Our school network IS at the top of the preferred list--and the others aren't on the list at all.

Our those other networks broadcasting on the same channel as your school network?

hmmm...

yes, you may want to change the channel of your wireless network and then look at the wireless management/configuration program and see if it allows you to lock the channel in on the client side (I don't think the windows wireless tool allows for this but a proprietary one might).
