Online but can't search

I can log on AOL Instant Messenger but I can't go through any website. I'm using IE7 and Mozilla, both do not work. I'm connected online. What should I do to fix this? A friend told me I have to go into the registry to fix it but I don't know what to do.

Did it ever work?? What type of Internet connection are you using? Fear not, you will not have to go into the registry to fix this...
Just sounds like a simple DNS server setting, but we can't tell you how to fix till we know what type of internet connection your on..

Yes it has always worked until like like the beginning of may..worked for like half a year already since I got the laptop. And yes it's a wireless.

How do I fix the DNS Problem?

Go to command line and type ipconfig /all and post the ip settings for your wireless adapter.

Once we see those we should be able to get you going again.

Specifically were looking to see if your getting DNS server IP addresses there on your wireless adapter, which is why we need to see the results of ipconfig /all, but no you can leave out the IP address if you like but specifically we want to see if your getting the IPs of the DNS servers. We know your getting a good IP address or IM wouldn't work. What exact type and who is the ISP, and what kind of wireless adapter is it???

i had similar problem, what i did was went to netowrk connections, and siabled the connection, and then i re-enabled it and it worked.

you can tell it is a DNS problem if you can browse to the IP of google but it doesnt find www.google.co.uk. so type this into your browser: 64.233.161.147 and if you see google then you know its definately problem with your DNS servers. Soemtimes you DNS servers are specified in your internet settings and you can get your DNS ip addresses from your ISP, sometimes the router gets those automatically and handles it all so you dont have them specified on your computer. (my belkin router does that.)

I'm using Cox Rhode Island. I have the worst linksys one..not sure what it is but i know its version 4. BEFW11S4 V4...I think, and what should I be posting up exactly, because I got a whole list on the ipconfig /all.

Oh I found my DNS Servers and it has 68.9.xx.xx so I think that could be the problem.

maybe call your ISP and get the ip addresses of your ISPs DNS servers, then go into TCP/IP settings on the network connection and enter those as the default DNS addresses, should fix the problem, if a "detect settings automatically" doesnt work that is.

did you try the ip address in your browser for google to double confirm it was definately a DNS error.

Is the actual connection from your house to the internet via your provider COX, cable, dsl, or wireless broadband???????
I think you have cable broadband, and are using a router and are wireless form the router to your PC, and just do a repair on your wireless connection and it should start working, right click on it and choose repair..

You PC won't even have a public IP address since your behind a router. If you really want help could you just answer what were asking and try what is suggested????

I know I have cable wireless. Not sure though, I'm not computer smart. I have a cable modem and a wireless router.

Yes I tried the google IP address. It did not work.

And I have tried that repair option it doesn't not work, I tried disabling my connection and reconneting it and it doesn't work. I pulled my wires off from my router and modem and reconnecting them it doesn't work.

OK, then, you have cable broadband internet and are using a wireless router to connect your PC to the Cable broadband internet connection, now could you please do the ipconfig thing and post us the results if you want help!!!!

maybe problem with your gateway settings then as if it was only DNS the IP addy for google would work.

try the OPEN DNS dns servers in yourbrowser settings see if that works..

else do you have any firewalls that may be blocking the web browsers?

I don't even have a firewall I don't think. What are the OPEN DNS? Need to give me directions on how to do it.

then its not a DNS problem if you change those server addresses and nothing works. it must be firewall or router problem i would think.

you sure you dont have zonealarm?

if you have windows XP SP2 do you have windows firewall turned on? its in your control panel, try turning it off and see if it resolves issue

OK stupid question time. Everyone jumped onto DNS problems without trying the obvious. You have soft reset the cable modem and router right? Sometimes it's that simple. Shut down all computers, then pull the power plugs from both the modem and router. Then give it a solid 20 count and plug the modem back in. Wait for the lights to come back on and for it to be ready. Then plug the router back in, wait for it to be ready. Then turn the computers back on. Thiis has fixed a lot of connection problems I've had that defy everything else.
