Multimedia drive problems

I have a Compaq 5610us computer running on windows xp. It has recently not acknowledged the DVD-ROM drive(e) or the DVD drive with the lightscribe system(f). If I go to the hardware onthe control panel, it tells me that it has the drivers for them, but it can't locate them. They also don't show up when i go to my computer. How do I solve this problem? The drives seem to be ok, as the lights flash when computer starts up or when you put in a disc. Any help would be appreciated. :confused:

Try going into device manager... uninstall the optical drives from in there... restart and see if they are redetected.

I tried this with no luck. It still does not detect the fact that they are there.

Are they seen in the BIOS?

Yep... do what TwoRails suggested and see if the drives are detected in the BIOS setup. If not... either the drives are faulty... the IDE cable is faulty or not connected properly... or the IDE controller is faulty.

Remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values completely from the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

I have changed the IDE cable, tried troubleshooting with device manager, restarting the computer. I went to Compaq(HP) website and it said to use F1 to get into the BIOS when you restart the computer. This didn't work. The only F key that worked was F12 & it took me to setup. This is getting frustrating. When I troubleshoot with the device manager, it gives me error code 41 for both drives. When I get a listing of hardware, it lists both drivesand puts an alert symbol by them with the definition "indicates the device is in a problem state. A device in a problem state can be functioning. A problem code explaining the problem is displayed for the device."

I agree with GLC. Run regedit. Go to the Registry Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}. Then remove the UpperFilter/LowerFilter

Theres a problem with the Driver and needs to be reinstallled. To reinstall it you need to use regedit. My Compaq Presario enters the BIOS by pressing F2.

I went to the website http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060, downloaded the guided help program and let it do the work. It solved the problem & both drives are up and running, and are reconized as drives e & f as before. Evidently this problem must happen quite a bit. I definitely THANK you all for your help, as I am a novice when it comes to computers. Some things I can do & other things I'm in over my head. THANKS!!
