250GB SATA drive freezes when formating

I have A MSI nforce3 motherboard with a Sata Raptor and 2 ide harddrives.
Im trying to install a Maxtor 250GB SATA drive that i have plugged as sata1 but when i try to format it either with Windows format, Partition Magic or Acronis Director, the format freezes and windows locks up.
I Have Windows XP Pro SP2 and windows finds the Hardrive i cant just format it. Any clues?:confused:

Get the diagnostic utilities from the Maxtor web site and test the drive with it. Could be defective.

Alternatively - they're on the ultimate boot cd (www.ultimatebootcd.com). Since Maxtor is owned by Seagate now, you use Seatools diagnostics to test both brands of drives.
