Yesterday my computer complely froze when just doing the normal things. I had to reboot, and now would only see a bluescreen error telling me "UNMOUNTABLE BOOT VOLUME." No big deal, I researched a bit and fixed the problem (using "chdsk /r") in recovery console).

But what caused this problem? My fear is that my hard drive may be failing. This is an old drive from 2002 that hadn't been formatted since. Should I copy everything over to another hard drive?

Its always good to perform routine backups... you should do it too.

Usually the error message just means the file system is damaged and cannot be mounted for some reason (more commonly it is due to a corruption in the BOOT.INI file)... but... download the hard drive manufacturer's hard drive diagnostic utility and run it on the HDD to see if it is fine.

The Utimate Boot CD has the HDD diagnostic utilities on it too... it is a useful tool to have around...
