 Well I got a new Zune off of Ebay and it arrive saturday. Glad to see it was indeed new, but the installation of the software was complete crap, as half of it wouldn't work right (Blocked, partial installation, no-connection etc.) after troubleshooting for 4 hours, I got everything working. Now a day later, (This also happened yesterday Evening) I would be going through folders or files I normally browse on my computer, and Windows decides my files are trying to Execute something and closes all my programs (Freezing everything as well even after closure) D.E.P. (Data Execution Prevention) of "Windows Explorer" crashes everything, even after I set it to leave Windows Explorer alone, here's a screenshot: http://img440.imageshack.us/img440/8016/windowsisafailurejq7.th.jpg (http://img440.imageshack.us/my.php?image=windowsisafailurejq7.jpg) http://img440.imageshack.us/img440/8016/windowsisafailurejq7.jpg two links in case one decides to not work  any idea how to access my folders again? I can't exactly use my zune without the zune software... any other installations / ideas that could have caused this? I installed cucusoft zune video converter as well, but this was happening before the install. I also ran CCleaner and wiped out my "local settings/temp" folder, as well as all other internet cookies and caches. As much as I want DEP to leave me alone, I also don't want anything running on my PC that I don't know about/need.

Btw, here's another cut/paste link that shows ALL my running processes, if you guys see anything that shouldn't be there, or is questionable PLEASE let me know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Uh Oh.
The problem is the Zune software : http://www.engadget.com/2006/11/13/installing-the-zune-sucked/5

It's likely that your purchase came with the old software so go here for the latest : http://www.zune.net/en-us/meetzune/software.htm

and read carefully before you begin.

Installing the stuff is still a pain but it needn't be a disaster.

hmmm I didn't have any crashes like that with ZUNE, I however, have had many D.E.P. crashes of "Windows Explorer" since installing ZUNE. My software is version 1.3.5728.0 > The version for the Windows XP SP2 ZUNE software, downloaded from the website, is unknown. I'm not sure I want to install this new one UNLESS it will stop the D.E.P. errors, I would hate to have to re-sync my selected media to the ZUNE and get all the media I didn't want Synced off the zune...

UPDATE: Tried system restore, here's the info...

Saturday May 19
3:39:30 PM Unsigned driver install
2:39:46 PM Software Distribution Service 2.0
2:39:30 PM Installed Zune software
2:01:07 PM Installed Windows XP KB926239.
2:00:21 PM Installed Windows Media Format Runtime
2:00:04 PM Installed Windows XP MSCompPackV1.
1:59:20 PM Installed Zune software

Sunday May 20
10:58:15 PM Restore Operation
10:46:29 PM Restore Operation
10:40:24 PM Removed Zune
5:49:56 PM Removed WexTech AnswerWorks

I did remove ACTool (along with other programs, and ALSO installed some more) and a part of it (actool) that said was no longer in
use but may be in use by other programs. When I restored to the Unsigned Driver install (Windows said it would Restore
to the point BEFORE the driver install) I no longer had the DEP Windows Explorer crashes!!!!
However, I uninstalled and deleted some things on my PC that I don't use/didn't want (prior to restore)
now their half-***ed files were scattered around my computer, unworking shortcuts, -
Heck even a bunch of .exe's of mine for programs install were not working... RESTORE MADE A HELLUVA MESS
So I "undo last system restore" and them I'm back to where I started. I haven't messed with the other restore points...
but the one that worked, was all screwed up, it uninstalled a couple programs, and the EXE's didn't work,
and programs I uninstalled at a later date, were showing up as installed, but didn't work - as they weren't installed
their logo's and shortcuts and folders lingered, even shown as installed in the control panel

man this is a freakin mess.

Do you have ccleaner installed? If not, do so. It will help remove a lot of crap plus leftover files from installs/uninstalls.

Check out the Zune forum : http://www.zunescene.com/forums/
Someone there may have a way out for you that doesn't involve a full uninstall/re-install and complete redo of everything ( from here I don't see much choice but they may know a few.).

Hah yeah, read my first post of the thread :) I did not find this problem on ZUNE forums either, I did a system restore to the::::: 2:01:07 PM Installed Windows XP KB926239. <--- point, and everything seems, ok... it added 2 gigs of crap I uninstalled/deleted BEFORE doing the restore, so now I got to deal with Semi-installed programs. hmm, I just cleaned up AGAIN, now that i've done the restore, and brought my free space up another 2 gigs, I think I got it.

I am faced with a new problem, system restore created problem... it renames folders to foldername(2) or filename(2).exe and etc. now I deleted all those (2)'s that the restore put on my files and such, but the EXE's and launchers etc. to programs like Zune and CuCusoft video converter are not working, its like the program is half installed half deleted... kind of like the ones i wanted to get rid of, but this restore ADDED onto what I had deleted, and DELETED what I had added onto, program/file wise. any tips on getting that space/data back?

I'm going to try to re-install those programs and see if it says there is already such and such data.

EDIT/UPDATE: O M F G .... pos restore, solves one problem, creates three more. I had my portable HD connected to the PC, I had put some data on it that took me some time to get, and... IT IS GONE. Empty folder and a text file, all that remains... the rest was removed or w/e restore does; any way to get THIS data back? **** Scummy windows restore needs to go get .... bleeped.

Read the instructions carefully before you use this : http://www.pcinspector.de/file_recovery/uk/welcome.htm

When you get the files back remember to disconnect the usb drive, or at least turn it off, before you do anything else with your computer.
You're going to have to start from scratch with the downloaded Zune software.

edit : Your files are still there, it's just that the OS can't see them now.

----> Please for the love of god, read everything before you think to reply <----

wow, I am flippin mad. The system restore I did fixed my computer from getting Data Execution Prevention crashes > DEP crashes.

The restore also uninstalled Zune, deleted some programs I had, and installed others which I had RECENTLY uninstalled. Also, that which the restore did install AND uninstall, it did half-a**edly and these programs were halfway on-halfway off my computer.

After getting everything back to normal I had one thing left to do, put Zune on my PC. Put Zune on my PC and get it to work. Putting Zune on my PC was ok. Getting Zune software to recognize my Zune device, required me DELETING and RE-SYNCING my entire data library.

So I am ticked... Then, for the love of Satan and all that is irony; MicroSuck drops an unholy mass of F-bombs on Microsoft and Zune!!!!!!! I AM NOW RECEIVING ****DEP**** errors again. Zune software IS INCOMPATIBLE with Zune device, its INCOMPATIBLE with MICROSOFT WINDOWS EXPLORER; and it seems to have NO FIX.

I have been searching the web for THREE DAYS, about 30 hours out of the 3 days been wholly devoted to SEARCHING THE WEB for a DEP fix. Now I am back to the BEGINNING.

In the beginning, there was my first post. I have DEP errors due to Zune. Well now that is 100% confirmed that ZUNE is the cause of the problem. Quick reminder, My problem is DEP closing out all my folders on the computer upon access to pretty much any folder.

My final words; screw compatibility; How do I OBLITERATE >DEP<?

I'm not sure you can can nuke it but you can get around it ( and isn't it amazing the Microsoft should have instructions on doing so in their KB ? I wonder ... ).

damn Every time I load up pcmech.com or any page therein, a stinkin tribalfusion popup window appears, whats the exception here? Cause I rarely get popups...

anyway... The "work-around" fails to work around the problem... I tried to AGAIN, but to no avail. Check my FIRST screeeennshot in my FIRST post, and you'll see what i'm talking about...

I don't like the idea of disabling DEP because the Zune Software is a proven Pile of scummy ****, but apparently if I want to have a zune, I need it; Unless I can live with a one-time Sync of the Zune device...... ... I got a support number to call Zune, but how convenient its only available for the short amount of hours that I sleep after work......... irony

You've had a really bad few days.
Can't help you with tribal fusion but DEP never struck me as that great an idea, or maybe it was just its' poor implementation ( The idea was that it would halt buffer overflow attacks, and there were a few horrible ones but that's it and it doesn't protect you from your own errors. Also, there's lots of badly written software out there, including Microsoft's. ).
Microsoft's Support, the ones I've dealt with, have been competent, courteous and merciful.
You could get a cd with useful software for your Zune or a full refund so it could be worth your time and sleep.

I hear you, especially on the sleep part. I bought it on Ebay, don't know about a refund - I love the device, I hate the software.

Well for now, I pulled another system restore, and I've narrowed it down to this::: Zune IS installed. I also get NO DEP Errors - BUT - At Zune's Current State, the program Does Not recognize when Zune device is connected, - and as soon as it does, (I don't think Im' doing it correctly, done it 2 different ways so far, not sure how either) it is THEN that I receive DEP errors when accessing any folder.

The installation method on the pics that came with Zune, are wrong... crappiest installation method ever, it consists of three pictures, and its been said that they are numbered/shown in the wrong order anyway, thus causing problems.

I am thinking that if I uninstall Zune, ONE LAST TIME, and find the Proper way to Install Zune ANNNNNDDDD Sync the device, (get it to connect to the software) in one shot, together, at the same time ... then I have a feeling DEP error might not occur! Alas, half the info for installation and troubleshooting on the web has yet to address the problems... so I'm not sure where to really begin. Zune.net had some really poor information, none of it helps with the more in depth problems... ah hell.

All in all --> I am now looking for the proper way to Install / Sync the Software / Device, together in harmony, and hopefully the balance proves euphoric symphony. *cough* Hope it all works.

UPDATE:: I did a restore, to a point where ZUNE is installed, but my device is seen as a GUEST; and I'm dead sure that as soon as I do otherwise, the device will be erased again... BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY, doing so (syncing) will bring back the DEP errors... So I thought, about this:: http://img522.imageshack.us/img522/3153/stupidzunetq6.th.jpg (http://img522.imageshack.us/my.php?image=stupidzunetq6.jpg) <--- This image, is when I try to use my Xbox360 ID and it brings me to that. I have a feeling that if I get past this, my device might be recognized by the software, and doing so without introducing the conflict of DEP ERRORS!!! Just a thought... 50/50 chance it'll work... But you gotta have ... some... hope. Hah!

So how do I get past this?:::: http://img522.imageshack.us/img522/3153/stupidzunetq6.th.jpg (http://img522.imageshack.us/my.php?image=stupidzunetq6.jpg) The basics didn't work, as cookies ARE enabled... so I figure its some setting thats more evading, not so common or w/e that I apparently disabled. Hopefully this is the holy grail to solving the problem~

well I had no error messages this morning, then I messed with Zune, and also re-installed CuCusoft converter, cause both programs said they were installed... but both would receive errors upon launch... system restore is a joke... So I just did ANOTHER system restore, says Zune and CuCuSoft are installed, but they're not... so I'm deleting them entirely There must be a fix for this crap; no wonder so many Zune's for sale on ebay, the software is COMPLETE Garbage!
