Installing Vista to New SATA Drive

I installed a Seagate SATA drive in addition to an IDE drive which has XP installed. I can see, format and save data to the SATA drive from XP but whenever I try to install Vista on the SATA drive I receive the message " Windows cannot be installed ....the partition contains one or more dynamic volumes that are not supported for installation". I looked for a driver on Seagates site but could not find one. Should I look for a driver on the mother board manufacturers site instead?

Did you try to repartition and reformat the new SATA HDD with the Vista cd?

When does the error message occur?

Also... are you trying to install Vista while your logged into XP? You need to pop in the Vista CD... restart the computer... go into the BIOS setup and set the CD as the FIRST boot device... then save your changes pop in the OS cd... reboot and boot from the CD to start the installation.


You may also need to install the SATA drivers before you can install the OS... it will usually ask you to hit F6 or something when you first boot from the OS cd if you want to install third party drivers.

And yes... you usually can find the drivers at the motherboard manufacturer's website.

I initially initialized the drive using the xp disk manager, which resulted in the drive being classified as a dynamic disk. I had to run the diskpart utility to delete the partion and then reinitialize and format the disk using the Vista CD.

I just had the exact same problem.

If you go to Disk Management you will be able to see if the disk is using a dynamic or basic partition.

My SATA drive was using dynamic partioning. SO I deleted both volumes and then converted the disk to basic.

I then re partitioned the drives and installed Vista
