Picked up this notice from the weekly newsletter put out by KimKomando.com.

"Hackers are trying to trick businesses into downloading a harmful Word document. The e-mails purportedly come from the Better Business Bureau. They say a customer has filed a complaint against the business. An attached document supposedly contains details of the complaint.

The Word document is mislabeled with a PDF extension. Embedded in the document is a keylogging program. It records data from the victim’s computer and uploads it to a Malaysian server. In February, the Better Business Bureau warned of a similar attack. However, the earlier attack directed recipients to malicious Web sites.

If you receive one of these e-mail messages, don’t open the attachment!"

For your info...

BBB does not send out any notification when a complaint is filed. As a matter of fact, they often misrepresent this when contacting customers (via telephone) for marketing purposes. They will say "we received an inquiriy regarding your business" and when you respond you will find it to be a solicitation for joining the BBB. Obviously, this has nothing to do with the false e-mail, but it may help to understand that they do not solicit in this manner.

In fact, most legitimate businesses do not solicit via e-mail.
