Hey guys,

Any ideas to solve a problem i'm currently experiencing...

Just built a new PC and installed Vista on it. Problem is that my broadband speed is much, much slower running Vista on the new machine than the PC it will be replacing.

I get a solid 4mb connection through my old PC, running XP and around a 10th of that on the new one. Ive tried wired and wireless connections and that doesn't make any difference so I'm left utterly confused. Any suggestions you can throw my way will be gratefully received.

Thanks

What are the specs of the pc and what type of internet connection do you have? Also, does your network card use the Vista driver or a driver from the card manufacturer? If it's the former, check with the card manufacturer whether there is an updated driver for Vista available. HTH

It has an Asus striker extreme motherboard, Intel Core 2 Duo 6600 processor and a new netgear WPN311 network card in the PCI slot. 2x SATA HDs and a nVidia 6600GT videocard.

I have 4mb cable broadband. What's confusing me is that the speed is the same through the network port on the motherboard and the wireless PCI card, which makes me think it is a software issue???

Where are you getting your speed numbers from out of curiosity? Try www.speakeasy.net/speedtest and see what it says so we have some hard numbers to work with.

As Floppyman said, drivers would be the first place to look. Get the latest LAN driver from Asus and wireless card drivers from Netgear if they have Vista (and they should).

I've just done a test on speedtest.net (the website suggested appears to be US only and I am in UK).

Results were 1590kbps download, 361 kbps upload, which is a massive improvement on an hour or two ago when it was ~400kbps download.

My other PC, on the same wireless network is hitting a solid 4000kbps (well, 3960). Have already downloaded latest drivers for the wireless and LAN. Do you have any other ideas cos I am completely

A quick update for those interested - I reinstalled Vista and that seems to have sorted the problem out. Don't what happened, but thanks to those who tried to help - much appreciated
