I am new to firefox, with a new pc (windows xp). I have used Netscape browser with my old pc. Is the malware a big problem with firefox like it is with ie?

Frrefox is safer than IE but you can still get malware.

This is a list of security programs I use on my computers and I haven't been hit with any malware is quite some time now. I use Opera as my main browser.

Ad-Aware SE
Spybot: Search & Destroy
SpywareBlaster
AVG or AntiVir
AVG AntiSpyware
CookieWall
CoolWebShredder
IE Spyad
A modified HOSTS file

I don't run near the amount of things that Cricket does, but I've never had any problems with Firefox, nor of I heard of any either.

Uh, the browser you are using is less likely related to intrusion of malware then the sites you surf and what you click on. I used to use Firefox and went back to IE several years ago. No difference, no infections.

When Firefox first came out most hackers were exploiting the vulnerabilities in IE. Since many have gone to Firefox now I'm certain just as many FF vulnerabilities are being taken advantage of (whoops, ended a sentence in a preposition, I know English better then that!).

The bottom line is to protect yourself with anti-spyware and anti-virus programs and watch carefully what you do on the Net. No browser or security program can protect you from yourself...
When you start thinking you're bulletproof, you're likely to find out that you are not.
