I am helping my girlfriend over the phone setup their home network. She has a XP, her dad has Vista Basic. Hooked up the DSL modem and the computers to the router, however, only her dads computer is working. So since her dads computer was working on port 1, i had her switch hers to there and see if maybe the other ports were bad. Her's still did not work. So we switched her dads back to port 1 and hers to port 2 since that works for her dads comp. I have tried switching hers to ports 3 and 4 and restarting inbetween to see if there is any difference and there isn't. Is there something I am overlooking on her computers settings? I built it for her at my house and had it on my network just fine, but now that she is trying to hook it up there we have had no luck. Thanks!

PS - She can access the router settings but not connect to the internet, so the connection there is good.

Try this, power all parts off and wait a mninute. Now power on modem, wait another minute, power up router, again wait a minute, now power up PC 1 and 2.

I was having weirdness with same model router but cable modem instead of DSL, this sequence fixed all the connectivity issues.

I have already had her power cycle everything multiple times. Maybe a couple more? These routers are cake to setup, thats why I am so confused with this.

assuming the network interface is not disabled on your gf's machine or something of the sort, pull an ipconfig /all from both computers and see what the difference is. I assume you have the router setup to do dhcp? If everyhing matches, (except the ip address of course), see if you can ping between machines and then go from there.

Nothing is disabled on hers. It was running fine on my home network before I gave it to her. I have the same router and just use the default settings as well. DHCP is enabled.

Is this an existing home network, or a new install (i.e. broadband was installed just recently)? If it was just recently installed, which computer was used to install the DSL connection? It might be necessary to clone that computer's Mac address into the router. If it was not a recent install, what is listed under DNS servers on the gf's machine?

New install. The DSL was setup on the other computer for only a week or so. Her DNS server is 192.168.1.1.

She has Bell South DSL, I'm thinking she needs to get the login information into the router.

What exact model is the DSL modem?

Your "modem" appears to be a "modem/router", so you might be better off bridging it for use with a router. http://www.voipmechanic.com/westelltobridge.htm
