I am having internet troubles on my other computer. I can successfully ping websites, but when I open any web browser it always says that the web page is unavailable, no matter where I try to go. Also, in Xfire, I can get info on game servers, but I can't actually logon to Xfire.

I also cannot connect to my router through a browser anymore, but when I ping my router's IP it goes through.

When I try to load a page in IE7 and run through the troubleshooting wizard after the page won't load, it says that I have issues with Winsock. After I select the option to reset everything back to its default setting, I get the following in the log:

--------------------

error Could not make an HTTP connection.
error Could not make an HTTPS connection.
error Could not make an FTP connection.
---------------------------

I then proceed to restart my computer, but I when start it back up I run into the same exact problem, and the error log is exactly the same except for the time.

I did not change any settings recently, and I think this problem might be because of some sort of malware.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.html

Try running this tool and let us know if that fixes the problem. If not, we'll troubleshoot from there. HTH

Note that for XP-SP2, that is NOT the correct fix. The registry entries for SP2 have changed significantly, and SP2 has a repair built-in.

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2.

For these commands, Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt.

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset reset.log

Reboot the machine.

Good to know, thanks for making us aware of that.

The old WINSOCK fix sometimes makes SP2 run, but it breaks a number of the features of the new stack. I recommend using this method for any SP2 systems.
