Overheating Problem

Ok
So yesterday, I fired up some Counterstrike Source and I started playing for an hour or two and I get to a pretty detailed map with a cabin or two. I start playing on the map as Terrorist and all of a sudden, my screen turns glitchy and just freezes.

I reboot and I see a error message before XP booted saying "Temperature Error" or something like that in a bios screen with a red logo (keep in mind mine is Asus.....)

Well now when I play a game for more than like 20 mins, my pc'll just shut down outta nowhere. Like even in Wolfenstein ET.


I know its summer and yeah, I'm gonna buy another fan which might solve it but i'm really getting worried.

THOUGH. I was on the internet for 2 hours straight on like Firefox with music and stuff in the background and it was ok.

I think it's just the games. Hope I don't have to do a Reformat :(.

Anyone know what could be the problem?

(EDIT: I've had this computer since I first built it in Nov. last year. The specs are AMD Athlon 3800+, Radeon X-1600XT, 1 Gig of Corsair RAM, an ASUS Mobo, and 1 fan on the side of the case with a heatsink on the CPU. I think I need more fans, maybe that's the problem..... help lol :( )

Have you checked the temperatures in Bios or through a utility?

You only have 1 case fan on the side? Is it blowing in or out?

You need at least 1 exhaust fan on the back of the case to help remove heat from the case.

You may also need a front intake fan to help bring cool air into the case.

Thanks for the advice. I think i'll get two fans just like you guys said, just gotta ask my sister for some extra money lol.

Though I didn't check the temperture in the BIOS for it. I should. Is there really a tab for that in a BIOS screen?

and my MB Temp is 84 F!

Is this bad?

Is this bad?150 F is 65.5 C...that's very high if that's a idle temp. You might want to check if the CPU heatsink is installed properly. You might even want to remove the heatsink and see if you have too much thermal compound between the heatsink and the CPU. Too much thermal compound prevents the two surfaces from making physical contact...you must have actual contact between the two surfaces for thermal transfer to occur.

The MB temp is fine.

So how would I take the heatsink out? Do I just screw it out and it just plops out? Or do I need a special solution of some kind?

Anyway, I put some cables around with breadties and I cleaned up the dust and screwed in the heatsink more.

Now the temperture's at 125.5 F for CPU. (EDIT #2: that was to start out with) Now its 130-131 flucuating.


Is this bad still?

I'm getting the fans in a week cause my mom doesn't have spare money right now. Lol this is gonna suck to wait to play CSS.

131 F is about 55C.

I haven't built a AMD computer in awhile and I'm not familiar with what kind of typical temps they should run at, but I thought that since AMD went with SOI (silicon on insulation) their CPUs ran fairly cool.

You would be correct there.

Not sure what set up this is, but I'd make sure that there is good contact between cpu and hsf, modern AMD chips are usually sub 35c idle maxing at 45c under load with stock HSF and no OC'ing.
