AVG keeps telling me I have Trojan horse BackDoor.Generic4.LND
C:\Windows\system32\vistaj.sys

It won't remove it or let me move to vault. I tried with system restore off, and it still wouldn't.

Spyware Doctor won't get rid of it. I also tried Ad-Aware. I did HijackThis, but don't know what to remove.

Thanks in advance for replies. Please keep in mind that I'm not very technical.

symantec's website has a good online virus scan, and virus removal tools available for free.

a2 asquared free has a lot of antitrojan in it's program until you get the HJT help.

Have tried running AVG while windows is in safe mode.

One or two things I've noted. You say you use AVG but according to that log you still have Norton Anti-Virus installed; remove one or the other.

Generally, I prefer to run a diskcleanup before removing any malware - as some malware finds itself there - use Windows own tool or CCleaner. It will help speed things along.

Now for the bad news; vistaj.sys is a rootkit. Which might explain why AVG won't remove it. Read the following very carefully:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/lofiversion/index.php/t75555.html
http://www.sophos.com/virusinfo/analyses/trojhaxdoorca.html

You might want to think about where this infection could have come from, so you don't repeat the situation after you clean your system.

The symantec site has never heard of that trojan. I'm not familiar with a2 asquared. I can't seem to get AVG t run at all in safe mode.

The Norton stuff was installed as part of the computer, and I added the AVG after the free Norton expired.

Make sure you totally uninstall the Norton's. It can cause a conflict with the AVG.

a2 http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/
It is best to use Symetics Removal Tool to get rid of Norton, then do a search & delete for anything that might be left behind.

I ran your log through a online analyser (they are not to be trusted) it only found a Verizon phone home thing that should be removed.
Maybe the AVG forum knows something. http://forum.grisoft.cz/freeforum/list.php?4
If no one does your HJT, there are other forums I can give you.
Do disable one of the AVs first.

I forgot, AVG Antirootkit http://free.grisoft.com/doc/39798/lng/us/tpl/v5
But it may be best to get a HJT pros help.

Panda also has a free anti-rootkit scanner which will detect and remove it for free (says the advertising).

Find it here:

McAfee also has a root kit tool you can use for free.

I got this from the AVG Anti-rootkit:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\vistaj.sys Hidden driver file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\vistaj.sys Hidden File

Should I remove them?

I think you should have a HJT experts help. pcguide.com or pcpitstop.com are are really good.

You do need a Experts help, if none shows up try pcpitstop.com.

Those vistaj files are definitely root kit oriented. Remove them. Also follow law99's advice and use the Symantec Removal tool to uninstall Norton. AVG will often give false positives when multiple Anti Virus programs are installed. I would also suggest examining the many programs you have running at StartUp. Go to run>msconfig>Startup tab and used the link below to determine if the items checked are necessary, unnecessary or optional.

http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php
