Upgrading memory dual channel question

Is it necessary to have the EXACT same two sticks of ram to take advantage of dual-channeling? For example, i want to upgrade the notebook i am ordering to 2GB ram, so should i buy a 2GB kit (1gb x 2 sticks?) or just 1 stick of 1gb? Will it still be equally fast this way?

It is recommended that the sticks match.

But if you can get one stick that matches the size, speed, and latency of the stick already installed in the laptop... then I think you should be okay too.

ehh...cant find that info. I might just stick with 1GB for a while on the laptop. I'll mostly be using it for schoolwork/email/etc.

Yeah... 1GB should be enough for what you listed the laptop will be used for.
