I have regular speakers hooked up to the back of the computer for several months. I also have a microphone jack and a headphone jack on the front of the computer. If I remember right, when I would plug in the headphones in the front of the computer, the sound would then come from the headphones, and STOP coming from the regular speakers. Now, when I plug in the headphones in the front of the computer, there is no sound from them, and the sound continues coming from the speakers. Is this a software problem, a hardware problem, or did I mess up something ? Running Windows XP Pro.

It just a setting. You must have it set so that the front doesn't and the back does. I'm guessing you have a creative card, and its just one of the settings you can change.

Whubbard--The documentation that came with the computer (not a name brand) says it is a
CMI 9739A 6 Channel Codec. I believe it is built into the motherboard. I searched around the SOUND area in control panel, under AUDIO and sound playback, I see Realtek AC97 Audio.

yeah, realtek AC97 is a generic encoding.
If you can't find the setting...I'm not really sure if there is much you can do about it. Your best bet is contacting the manufacturer

Additional info. I checked the Microphone jack and also the Headphone jack in the BACK of the computer. They also do NOT work. The only jack that DOES work is the small green one that I currently have the speakers plugged into. I will be going away for the weekend, but I will check back for any other suggestions. Many thanks, Mike
