Can someone reccommend a free virus program for personal use? I have used AVG before, but just reformatted my hard drive, and need to download a program. Are there others that are better than AVG?

I get tired of paying for programs, and then have to fork over more money to renew them after they expire.

Are pay programs any better than free programs regarding virus protection???

+2 on AVG

Make sure you install antispyware software too.

I have Spybot Search & Destory, Lavasoft Ad-Aware, and SpywareBlaster installed.

Another good free antivirus is AntiVir (http://www.free-av.com/). I have it on this computer and AVG on my other 2 computers. Both seem to have small foot prints and are light on system resources so they don't slow down the computers at all.

Pay for versions aren't really "better" as far as virus detection goes, they just seem to have more automated features that make them more user friendly to people who aren't computer savvy.

It seems people who've been around computers awhile and are familiar with them tend to choose free antivirus programs for their computers.
