I am needing some help. My son is going to college out of state soon. We'd like to outfit both our computers with a web cam so we can have video calls. We're hoping that will help cut down on homesickness a bit. My computer is an Ibuypower desktop with a pentium 4, 2.4GH processor. His is a Dell laptop a little faster. Both are USB 2.0 capable. If anyone can help me, I'd like 2 web cams, preferably plug and play, that are reasonably priced and good quality. They don't have to be state of the art cameras, but, I would like one that will give me a good quality picture and audio. Both computers are running on Windows XP Home Edition. I would appreciate anyone's help with which brand to buy or personal experiences.

I'd pick a Logitech. This one looks like a winner for a good price: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826104066

I agree on Logitech - but since you both have laptops, I'd get cameras that will mount to your screens like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826104021

Thanks for your help. Are these cameras complete with the software necessary to make a video call or do I have to buy some service from someone?

They won't have any call software that I can tell. But there are plenty of free solutions to use. AIM and MSN chat clients support webcams, and so does Skype.

I utilize Yahoo IM quite often to collaborate with associates around the world - it works flawlessly with a webcam and as long as you have a broadband connection, audio quality is stellar.

I have personally used Skype quite a bit to chat with people in the U.S./Overseas and it works well with Logitech webcams.
