Motherboard and Power Supply question

Ok I am installing a new motherboard Asus P4V800D-X but my power supply [Model AL-A400ATX Max 400W] only fits on one side of the mobo connector leaving 4 empty slots.

Is this normal or do I need to just purchase another power supply?

NO! I won't power it on till I know for sure.

You need a new ATX 2.0 power supply that has the 24 pin motherboard power connection.

I went to fry's and bought a power supply which turned out to be 20 pin. I was in a hurry and did not check behind the guy who sold it to me especially since they said they only sell 24 pin types. I even showed him my motherboard manual.

I know you said I need 24 pins but I need to double check because it's another 2hrs drive up there.

This would not be the first time Fry's didn't give someone the right product. You really do need the 24pin though. Be sure to get one from our 'Good' list: http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=131195

That said, it was just my lack of observation. The split 4/8 xtra pins is what I missed.

My original psu will work. It has the 2 extra pins. Hope it's a good psu/mobo combo.

My plans was not to spend a leg and arm for parts on a pc over 3 years old. But I must say that for a 3.24GHz 1GB RAM system I am not exactly ready to throw that away just yet.

Just needed a new motherboard for right now.
