I just built a new machine...
Asus P5B Deluxe mobo
Intel Core 2 E6700 2.66 GHz
eVGA GeForce 8800GTS 320mb
Hard Drive: WD Raptor 74GB
AeroCool Zerodba 500W power supply

When I first built it I didn't have Windows yet so I installed Linux, which I put on my Raptor hard drive and got it working with no difficulty whatsoever.

Finally got Vista Ultimate this weekend... and I decided just to wipe the Linux install. Took an overnight to install Vista... the install program is running REALLY slowly, like 4-5 minutes between screens. I figured whatever, must just be the install program being crappy for some reason.

Finally got Vista installed, and the OS is doing the exact same thing... click on Start, the Start Menu opens, but system freezes for 2 minutes before you can click on anything else. Move up, highlight and click on "Computer," takes another 2 minutes to open My Computer. Highlight and click on the C drive, takes ANOTHER 2 minutes to open up the C drive. It's virtually unusable.

Can anyone help me with this problem? I don't know if Vista is conflicting with some hardware that I have since both the install and main OS have been plagued by this slowdown. I would say it's a hardware issue, but Linux ran fine before I tried installing Vista. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

How much ram do you have?

And have you installed the necessary drivers? (video card, chipset, sound, etc). Mainly interested in Vid Card and Chipset drivers though.

I did a google, and some people are saying a BIOS update fixed their problem. I had a similar issue, but the install whipped through in like 25 minutes. It just took a day or two for Vista to finish it's indexing junk and calm down.

LeftyAce, I'm not sure drivers are the concern just yet since the install had the same problem.

Yes a BIOS should fix it...if not...Raptor issue...
