Hi folks!
Its that time again. Upgrade time. Im looking to upgrade my PC to a relatively future proofed DX10 capable machine. However I'm not here to ask about what parts I'll need.

I'm just wondering if anyone knows of any sites where you can 'build' a PC, by selecting components from drop down menus, for example - purely for comparrison, to check compatability and so I know where I'm going with things.

I have a sneaking suspicion theres a blindingly obvious solution floating about...

if you post your possible build list here we can tell you if you should buy a different part, brand to ensure compatibility and a good computer.

You could go to Dell's site or someplace similar, but you'll be limited most likely by the choices they offer. Also just because they list the choices, it might be compatible, but it may not the best choice. Like dogdude said we'll be more than happy to review your choices.

My current rig is this:
Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3200+, MMX, 3DNow, ~2.0GHz
Memory: 2048MB RAM
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GS
Sound Card: SB Audigy 2 ZS Audio [A400]
Motherboard: ASUS A8V VIAK8T (something like that - its an AGP, socket 939, 64-bit mobo though)

I'm not particularly up to date with new versions of memory etc at the moment. All these newfangled types popping up all the time... :D

A new motherboard I'm not too clear on so I'm open to suggestions and I'm still not clear with the processor either - may look at a better one...

If future proofing and DX10 are what you want, you shouldn't go with a socket 939 processor (AMD has stopped making them) and you'll want something other than that x1950...it's DX9

What's your budget? I assume this is to be a gamer, right?

Take a look at the Intel Core2Duo line of processors....they're the best bang/buck right now.

C2Ds use DDR2 ram....667 speed is fine.

Asus P5B motherboards are proven reliable, but a couple members have had success with the P5K which will be compatible with newer intel processors due to be released later this year.

The nVidia 8xxx series video cards are DX10 compatible....the 8800GTS and GTX are good gamers, the 8600s are ok if you're on a tight budget.
