I have been out of the gaming loop for some time now. Can some of you gamers please recommend some "must-play" games? I like most types of games. I don't want to play something that will run at a crawl on my system though.
Thank you.

FEAR would be my #1 choice. HL2 runs good on low horsepower systems but I have no problems with FEAR on my 4800+ with an 800. If you don't mind something older, then Halo is a blast.

Definitely the "Neverwinter Nights" Trilogy (Easiest way is "Diamond Edition"). Doesn't necessarily look the greatest, but the storyline is well developed. Play the campaign and whatever multiplayer you can get your hands on, it's definitely good.
Don't know how old these might be, but if you're looking for MMORPGs, I'd highly reccommend either "Ever Quest" (1, not 2), and Dark Age of Camelot. The first being, in my opinion, the best MMORPG ever made, and the second definitely high up on that list. If you're into it, City of Villains/Heroes is something to check out.
A classic favorite of mine would be "Arcanum", a kinda old isometric view game with a rich story. Doesn't look to shabby either.

Thanks all. I will check out some of them and see which have demos. I tried the Company of Heroes demo and thought it was great. I still fire up Homeworld (1999) once in awhile so I need some new titles for sure!

Company of heroes is crazy fun online. I mean, how often do you get to call down a V-2 on "die American Cowboys".

I second Dawn of War. Dark Crusade is the lastest expansion and you DONT need the previous copies to play the game, only to lock some of the old races. If it matters to your there are a lot of mods/maps for Dawn of War.

Can't wait for Bioshock, got it on preorder. Played Oblivion and its expansions for about a year on and off, though I hear that Two worlds is somewhat like it. I will wait for the RPG bug to hit me again before I buy it.

Tom finds ways around getting unrealeased game. You can draw your own conclusion there. Anyways, It's been release din Europe and I have that copy. They have a current 1.4 patch, and a 1.5 patch on the way. I have zero problems with it on XP or Vista.

FPS - Battlefield 2 or 2142 have very good online ranking systems, I own my own BF2 clan www.eow-clan.co.uk. CounterStrike is popular too. Bioshock has just ben released and is very good.
MMO - There's tonnes out there from World of Warcraft to Star Wars Galaxies.
RTS - Command and Conquer games, Supreme Commander is apparently sweet.

Most of what everyone has posted are good games but it depends on what type of games you like as well. I usually go to gamespy to check out the latest reviews and previews of games. There is a really nice article you should read that lists the hottest games for this fall, some of which are out and some which are going to come out soon.

World in Conflict just came out, actually today, and looks like it is going to be really really sweet.

I'll be the third to say F.E.A.R., but only if you don't plan on using cheats. Full experience = play on the hardest mode possible, and don't stop shooting.

Didn't read all the posts so I hope this is not a repeat, but I'm now playing Serious Sam II and it's a trip... I've never played "that type" of game before, so I'm still adjusting, but I'm having a ball learning!!

Depends on what you like to play.
If your into First Person Shooters I like FEAR, Half Life 2 (My fav) and even Doom 3 is fun too. Yet to try Bioshock but I hear great things.
On a multiplayer: CounterStrike:Source is kick ass and I am loving Team Fortress 2 right now even though I'm only playing the Beta.
Strategy: I really like company of heroes and Command and conquer.

Half-Life 2 (all) - A classic must.
Unreal Tournament 4 - Try Adept bot and above.
Age of Wonder 2 Dark Magic - Turn-Base Strategy, just torrent it or something.
Zoo Tycoon 1 Complete Edition - ZT 2's animals are crappy.
Homeworld 2 - A lil bit old, but good nevertheless. Spectacular background.
Oni - A quite old game, 90s, but VERY High gameplay quality. Made by Bungie if that help.
Up comming:
Unreal 3
And...What else?

Seconding the Homeworld series. Flat out one of the BEST games I have ever played. If you like attention to detail and fairly complex gameplay (at least 1-2 hour learning curve), this series is for you.
