My Norton AV subscription is about to expire. I have not kept up-to-date regerding other AV SW and was wondering if I should take a look at another product. (I suspect that I may be taking a bit of a performance hit from all the stuff Norton loads and am wondering if there's an effective, leaner AV solution.) I'm just a home user with a small workgroup and an Internet connection via Verizon FiOS. Thanks for your help.

Agree, AVG Free for the AV side of things and then spyware wise AVG Anti-Spyware, Spybot and Ad-Aware SE.

Avast is another good one (and it's free, just like AVG).

And you're right about Norton. It's a bad resource hog and will slow your computer down quite a bit. Lose Norton and install either AVG or Avast (not both though....they'll mess each other up), and the spyware programs that Negeva listed and you'll be good to go.

Another good free antivirus is Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic (http://www.free-av.com/)

Personally, I would, and do, stay with it. It does work and has always (except '04) gotten high marks in independent tests like the ones PC World, and others, do. ... and yes, I know, everybody loves to hate it, but it does work.

I agree also that AVG is good - I have used Panda for many years and have been extremely happy with it (it's not free)
