I am currently testing out my third linux distro PCLinuxOS after trying Mandriva (several versions) and ubuntu and have been impressed with the ease of use by a newbie to linux (me), but at the same time I have noticed that each distro runs slowly on the internet. I mean the loading of web pages (I have addressed this issue in another thread under Alternative Operating Systems http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?p=1264341#post1264341) but was wondering if anyone else had had this problem???? Don't get me wrong, I am not giving up on Linux and I love this distro, but the slow web page loading is a major distraction. Could it be the translating of pages into linux fonts from windows fonts that slows it down? Any other theories???? Now chat applications and downloads seem to go quick enough, just the web pages are crawling along.

I've never noticed a difference.....
Which web browser are you using? And are your DNS settings set up properly (they should be if you can browse at all).

It's probably more of a browser issue (no IE on Linux) than an OS issue. Firefox renders pages a bit slower than IE. You might try Opera which generally renders pages faster but has other issues on occasion.

Yes Opera does load faster, but still slower than Windows IE/Firefox. Did a test on the DNS and a numeric address starts faster than a name address, but both take over 2 minutes to completely load. Will keep experimenting with the settings and see if I can improve it.

What are the specs on your machine? It could be that it can't handle both the GUI and the browser running at the same time.

I'm running Ubuntu with Firefox and it loads pages about twice as fast as my windows boxes do. That was one of the first things I noticed about surfing the web using Ubuntu was the increased speed.

Has to be some other problem. It's not Linux.

Let's close this one and continue in the other thread - it IS a Linux problem, the same computer browses fine in Windows.
