p4 extra connector on mobo

yo! i have a p4 using the 850 chipset. K. the thing is that couldnt find a case that is p4 'compatible' (im not in the states doods), so i just sticked with my 250 atx power supply. Instead of waiting for (unknown) time that a p4 power supplie arrives, i just plugged all using my standard case and give it a go. All works k, thankfully, but sometimes i think that something is not right, its just a detail but... the only issue i think is power related is when i get off the standby -so a nasty kind of white line appears on the monitor (im using a v4500) and after a few secs it just goes away. Thats all.

but i just want to be shure everything is ok. So, i heard somewhere about that naughty 4 'square' pins connector on the mobo is (dont remember the how much power) that goes directly to the processor. I also saw (cant remember where (damn)) about an adapter that turns the 4 inline conector in the 4 square ones so u just could plug in the mobo and there is no need of changing the power supply or the case :O). Now since, im not in the states, i just cant get that adapter so i was thinking in doing it myself. But i need more info about which pins goes where and stuff -capishe?
(btw im using a msi 6523 mobo)

I suppose it might be possible to run an adapter if you had the correct voltages to the correct pins, but I don't think it's advisable. I have heard of people running without the P4 power supply, some successfully, some with mixed results. I would recommend obtaining the correct power supply.

Hi folks!
That 4 pin molex connector is for 12volts and grounds.
The P4 uses 12 volt power that is regulated down to the processor core voltage.
Be advised that the system board traces are NOT ment to deal with the amount of current the P4 requires. The 4 pin molex connector has associated curcuit traces that are intened to deal with these currents.
You can try....
1. Locate the pin-out of the connector and add this connector and connect the wires to the 12volt side of the P/S. (not recommended)
2. Obtain the correct P/S. (best choice, obviously)
3. Use the system as-is. (poof!) <--- not recommended either!


You "should" shut the system down until you obtain the correct supply.

You're playing Russian roulette with an expensive piece of equipment. If you want to throw it away, you can always send it to me. ;) I will not turn it down. This is one of those things that something bad may never happen, but conventional wisdom says it will. The P4 motherboards are very particular, from what I understand. The Voodoo 5 will not even run on them, because of voltage issues; I read that in a voodoo forum. If it doesn't want to accept a video card because of energy issues, I can only imagine what you are toying with, my friend.

nah. look this is printed on the one of the latest asus mobo manual:
"..make shure that your ATX 12V power supply can provide 8A
on the 12 volt lead and 1A at least on the +5 volt stand-by lead.the minimum recommended wattage is 230 Watt or 300 Watt
for a fully configured system.The system may become unstable
and may experience difficulty powering up if the power supply is inadequate..."
