I am helping a friend with a bad CDROM in his computer. He wants to purchase a replacement locally. My choices are an AOpen or a Delta. While I don't really care for either one, which of the two would be the prefered one? My gut feeling is the AOpen but I don't know for sure, Both are 50x speed models. Anyone have any experience with either of these?

Neither, both are junk. I've used both and wouldn't touch either one ever again. We've been using ASUS and Sony with plenty of sucess.

I bought a new Delta 50x for $10. I am a sucker for deals and the deal suckered me in. Concisely said, they are crap. With cheap drives like those, you can hear the drive shift into different speed levels. Unless you like this noise (sounds like an old stick chevy pickup) avoid the cheap drives found at Walmart and Staples and get something quiet or something slower. 50x is a bit much for a glorified turn table.

Respectfully,

Demosthenes

The Sony 52x is certainly cheap enough and it's a very quiet and reliable drive.

I used an Asus 50x cdrom a while back. Great drive, worked like a charm. Although it was supposed to be a little louder than most cdroms (it spins up pretty high), it never bothered me. HTH

Thanks. I'll try to find a better brand for him.
