I've never used OpenOffice, but I lost my copy of MS Office 2003 so I'm exploring alternatives to installing my copy of Office 2000 Premium. It seems that the interfaces are exactly the same, but I'm a student, so I can't afford to have others have trouble opening files I email them, etc.
I'll also be using MS OneNote at school and don't know if it'll conflict with OpenOffice...

Open Office is compatible with Microsoft Office.
Just remember to save your work in the appropriate file format.
The problem would be Office 2007, but that doesn't inter-operate with any previous version of MS Office either.
edit : I can't help you with OneNote unless I know what version you're using.
It's so tightly integrated with Office and Outlook that it may not work with Open Office but I've never had occasion to try that out.

Thanks for the response. I'll be using OneNote 2007.
Go here and download the free trial : http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/onenote/default.aspx
That will answer the question beyond doubt.

Office 2003 has a compatibility pack (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=941b3470-3ae9-4aee-8f43-c6bb74cd1466&displaylang=en) that allows you to open the .docx and other extensions. Funny I just had someone tell me they couldn't open a word doc today. It was a .docx and she was using Word 2003. I thought about putting the converter on hers but we are going to update to Office 2007 in a month or so.
